Overview

Queen Eleanor’s School is situated in the heart of Onslow Village, on the west side of Guildford and in the shadow of the Cathedral and the University of Surrey to the one side, and the Downs and the Hogs Back on the other. We are also very fortunate in that we have Guildford town centre and the main line railway station less than a mile away, as well as the A3 and A31 running nearby.

Spiritually the residents are well served by All Saints’ Parish Church which is in the village, as well as the Cathedral on Stag Hill. In addition St Nicolas’ Church can be found on the edge of the town centre near to the River Wey. For sports facilities Queen Eleanor’s School is fortunate to have its own pool and extensive fields, while there are playing fields, a tennis club and children’s play area in Onslow Village itself.

Nearby we have the world class Surrey Sports Park and award winning council-owned Spectrum leisure complex with competition and leisure pools, ice skating, tenpin bowling and other sports facilities. More information on the Onslow Village and Guildford area can be found on websites* such as upmystreet.com, Guildford Borough Council and Surrey County Council.

About Us

Queen Eleanor’s C of E Junior School was opened in the 1940s.  The school used to be a secondary school in the old Surrey system and as a consequence, the school accommodation is excellent.  The class areas are significantly larger than many schools and provide the children with a huge amount of space for working.  There are also separate facilities for physical education, music, drama and ICT work.

We are fortunate to have both a school hall and a gym.  The hall also includes a large purpose built stage which is used for the many productions and class assemblies we have each year.  The library is situated in the heart of the school and is an excellent resource for study.  We also have our own outdoor swimming pool which is used for up to five months a year and allows all of our children to receive a minimum of an hour coaching a week.  We also offer an after school swimming club for each year group. The school stands in a four acre site in the heart of Onslow Village in Guildford.  It provides for safe, varied and stimulating work opportunities as well as space for play.  We have recently built an allotment and are planning to create further creative play areas on the site in the near future.

The school is organised into ten classes with three classes plus a bulge class in year group 5 , three classes in years 3,4 and 6.  The current number on roll is 390.  The school has 18 teachers which includes two job share classes.   In addition, there are 14 Teaching Assistants who support the classes and maths groups across the school. The children are enthusiastic, well-motivated and their independence and creativity is fostered.  Standards achieved are equal to or above the National Average in all core and foundation subjects.   Practical, first hand work is a real focus of our curriculum which follows a topic based system.

A successful OFSTED Inspection was achieved in October 2017. We also run a Before School Club and there is After School Care that uses the school site.

The Good Shepherd Trust is a family of schools within the Diocese of Guildford that support and help each other yet each school in the Trust knows that they are unique.  They also recognise that they have important roles to play in the development of their communities - both educationally and spiritually.

Living and Working in Surrey

Surrey is a county of contrasts. Only a short journey from London, it also offers a quick escape into peaceful countryside. This pleasant environment is combined with transport links that include the M3, M23 and M25 motorways, road and rail to London, and easy access to Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

In spite of a population of just over a million in a comparatively small area of 650 square miles, 80% of the county is farmland, woods, heath and open land. Although Surrey is a wealthy county, there are areas of relative poverty, particularly around some of the larger towns and a number of schools have pupils with a wide diversity of nationalities, cultures and languages.

Booming economy
There have recently been several major town centre redevelopments in Surrey. In the field of education and research, centres include Royal Holloway University (London) at Egham and Surrey University at Guildford. New research related technologies are also represented at Surrey University's research park and many multinational companies continue to relocate from London to Surrey.

Environmental issues
In Surrey there is a need to balance environmental conservation with the requirement for more homes, roads and commercial development.

For teachers in schools interested in green issues, Surrey County Council promotes environmental awareness with a wide range of initiatives to develop pupils' knowledge and experience.

Tourism and leisure
Surrey provides a wealth of contrasting leisure activities. Among the historic sites are Hampton Court Palace and Runnymede, as well as National Trust properties such as Clandon and Polesden Lacey. Other attractions include picturesque villages, gardens, such as Wisley, racecourses and river trips. Surrey also has seven major arts venues.

Sports centres are also plentiful, among them the Spectrum Centre in Guildford, probably the most exciting leisure complex in the UK. Other first-class facilities are available in Camberley, Egham, Lingfield and Oxted.

For cyclists and walkers there is an extensive network of footpaths, bridleways and cycle routes and Surrey also boasts high-quality shopping malls, particularly in Kingston, Guildford and Camberley.

The Visit Surrey tourism website gives comprehensive information about all these leisure activities.

Travel
Surrey has good road and rail links to London, Gatwick and Heathrow airports.
